Working at Six Apart

Hello! As you might know, the Pownce team is now working at Six Apart.

This week I'm working on a tool to import all of your Pownce notes into Vox with pictures and other media included. So yes, my Vox blog should get more interesting.

I'm pretty sad about Pownce shutting down. I'm not so sad about the technology or the code, but about more about the people. The Pownce community meant a lot to me and I'll really miss everyone. I'm hoping some of you, my Pownce friends, will join my Vox neighborhood or add me as a friend elsewhere.

Anyways, I'll just leave you with this song by one of my favorite bands, The Bird and the Bee.

I hate to ask like this, but is there any chance you would release the code for Pownce? It might be fun to implement something like it for my school's intranet site. There's so much private data involved with student records that we could never use a service like it unless it was on an protected intranet.

I'm sure you are bound by the terms of your merger, but I have ideas and I figured that I'd just ask. =)

So... instead of killing a great thing, why not release Pownce into the wild as FOSS? I could see (maybe just wishful thinking) this paralleling XMPP to an extent, with Pownce becoming more of a microblogging protocol that federates across domains. Doing storage without S3 might be possible using something like CouchDB...

I was sad when I got the email from Pownce. But it is probably the right decision so I hope it will lead to something good.

I loved pownce.

It's really sad to see Pownce going the way of the dodo, but at least you and Mike still have a job :-)

Btw.: How does this whole thing work out for you? Isn't SixApart more or less exclusively a Perl shop?

Wouldn't you rather blog on an open comment platform? Vox is pretty, but a closed community. I'll subscribe to your blog if you promise to continue to talk about code and oauth. :)

Leah, never mind criticism that follows a startups exit. Entrepreneurship is hard and challenging. Most people cannot stomach the pain that accompanies pioneering and so they are quick to fire off their mouth (which is easy to do). I admire what you and your team has done.

This sucks. Pownce was poorly marketed. It is vastly superior in functionality to it's main competitor. And what sucks even more is that SA is shutting it down. I despise SA more and more every day (LiveJournal, TypeKey). They seem determined to ruin what were good things. At least LJ is still thriving...

As I said in a comment to you on Pownce, I intend to shut down my Vox account in protest (besides I rarely use it anyway).

And nothing less than a full refund of the money I spent on my Pownce Pro account will be sufficient. I want no part of Six Apart!
