Last Wednesday night, kind of out of nowhere, a friend of mine said, "My Girl always makes me cry." I totally agree.
Of all movies I would have also picked My Girl as the one that always causes me to tear up. I think it's a pretty good sign that I still have a heart.
We then tried to come up with other films that were universal tear-jerkers. Bambi? Titanic? Hmm... maybe too cheesy. Any others?
My friends like to tease me about the time I feel asleep during the first 15 minutes of Wall-E in the movie theater.
I might have dozed off after drinking a bit too much wine from the bottle we snuck into the theater, but I think there was more to it. After the film, I tried to explain to my friends why I just don't like Pixar films.
It's not that I have no heart, it's just that Pixar films reek of the general San Francisco Bay Area smugginess and the jokes are terribly predictable. A Rubik's cube from the past? Probably belonged to someone who worked at Google. Ha ha ha... boring.
The lack of compelling female characters is also strangely disturbing. I guess I can't speak for Wall-E because I still haven't seen more than the first 15 minutes and the iPod-ish Eve character doesn't show up until a bit later. I didn't think anyone else had really noticed the lack of leading ladies until I saw this NPR blog article (which sparked this blog post).
Anyways, I'm sure I'll have to watch future Pixar films with friends. I'm hoping that Pixar can come up with something other than their predictable dude heroes and some wink-wink smuggy jokes. Until then I'll keep sneaking my wine and snoozing.
