Help! I can't stop watching this video. It's a mesmerizing techno remix of Disney's Alice in Wonderland. Enjoy.
I'll be back in Minneapolis in a couple of days to visit my family. One of my favorite things about Minneapolis is the chill music scene and 89.3 the Current (my favorite radio station, as I've probably mentioned before).
So yeah, here's a new song/video from the darlings of the Twin Cities, Tapes n' Tapes:

Note the non-ironic flannel shirt and fireplace. Hey, it's chilly.
Last Friday, I was invited to see A B & The Sea, a little un-signed band from Wisconsin, play at Hotel Utah. I got an email from their friend Rick and checked out their MySpace page. For a young band (all under 19 years old!) they've got a great pop sound and a little Vampire Weekend does Paul Simon plus Beach Boys thing going on.
Check out this video from the show. I didn't catch the name of the song... anyone know it?
I always wondered how similar being in a band would be to starting a company. I posted this song on Pownce a while back but it's worth another listen.
I had a great time at the Bird & the Bee show at the Independent last night. Here's a video!
Bird & the Bee - I Can't Go For That
The arm cat even got into it.
Permanent marker tends to not wash off so easily. I haven't named the arm cat yet. Any suggestions?
At dinner last night there was a discussion of how sometimes we get a overwhelming rush of sadness. Sometimes it can be triggered by a scene in a movie or a song but sometimes it's just kind of random. The first time I experienced this was when I was twenty-one, while brushing my teeth.
Maybe as you get older, you have more accumulated sadness and it finds ways to come out. I was listening to this song on the bus this morning and remembered how much I like that amidst the fast and strangely upbeat guitar, there are samples of people crying.
It's as if our moments of sadness almost get lost in the loudness.
Rita Hayworth used to say: "They go to bed with Gilda, they wake up with me"
- Anna Scott in Notting Hill
I always HATED Notting Hill because I never really sympathized with the lead female character of Anna Scott. Who really feels bad for movie stars? Then I happened to catch Notting Hill on the TV the other day and it made me cry. Seriously, WTF happened?
The funny thing about being just a little famous is that you go a little crazy and maybe drink a bit too much. Then you start to feel a little bit bad for the truly famous people. And when they do crazy stuff it makes a lot more sense.
The nice folks at EMI sent me a couple of CDs the other day (thanks!) including the new Lily Allen single which I find quite appropriate here.
I've included the video because it's so awesomely bizarre. Is it supposed to be like she's going from a twee trailer to a manor with servants and cupcakes and dancing gifts? I hope Lily Allen decided to keep being a "weapon of massive consumption" because her videos and Wikipedia page are only getting more awesome.
Lisa Phillips does a pretty good job of summing up the good points of Vox. I started using Vox because I wrote the export feed for Pownce data.
However, I really like keeping separate personal and work blogs. My other blog is at leahculver.com and although it started off being a mix of code and personal thoughts, it definitely took a turn towards code while Pownce was more personal.
I really love music and funny videos and it doesn't seem quite right to share those on leahculver.com... so the Vox blog! Enjoy!
I've been hanging out with my family in my hometown of Bloomington, MN for the holidays. While driving around picking up gifts I've been listening to 89.3 The Current which I've missed dearly. The Current streams online but somehow it only makes sense for me to listen while in Minnesota. I heard this song by Lykke Li and picked up the album which I'd recommend.
